DVB FCSD Packaging Engineering continues to explore improved packaging for bumper covers and fascias. On March 1, 2004, a pilot was launched to test the thirty-one highest damage-claimed covers in a new blue foam wrapper. This new wrap is twice as thick as the current wrap and has been successfully tested by FedEX. The new material is dark blue and easily distinguished from the white foam wraps currently in use. Yellow evaluation cards are affixed to parts during the pilot to collect customer feedback. The pilot is expected to run through the 3rd Quarter of 2004 or until sufficient customer feedback and damage claim statistics can be collected. Upon conlclusion of the pilot, FCSD Packaging Engineering will determine how extensively the new foam will be used. Customer feedback is requested to validate the new packaging effectiveness. KLG Because of dealer complaints and high damage claims, Packaging Engineering worked with the parts supplier to redesign the packaging for all gear & pinion kits that do not include liquids. The new packaging supports the gear and pinion separately, preventing chipping and puncturing through the container.

The packaging on these parts was revised from foam wrap (scrim) to a corrugated carton on 11/19/01. However, due to continued damage concerns, the carton style was revised to a "C" shape, and the carton was enlarged to prevent the bumper wings from flexing and to lock the part in the center of the carton. Additionally, corrugated reinforcements were added to both wings to protect against crimping in the corners.

1W1Z-13008-AD KLG Part was originally packaged with Pad-Pak dunnage. High damage part; part was shifting in the container, corners and brackets were breaking off, part was damaged internally. Changed the dunnage to two pieces of pre-molded foam - foam is placed on each end of the part. The part is now suspended within the container; corners and brackets are protected by the foam. The foam also absorbs some of the shock when dropped, which may have been causing internal damage.
